Golf team goes out feeling accomplished
The Fossil Ridge High School boys’ golf team didn’t finish the season the way it wanted to at state with a twelfth place finish out of 13 teams, but that doesn’t mean that the season wasn’t worthwhile. Senior Will Thwaites described state as, “a great memory but also sad because it was such a huge part of me.” Senior Brooks Hoffman also agreed with this statement describing state as “exciting.”
Hoffman and Thwaites said they anticipated having a successful season; however they knew they couldn’t accomplish this task unless they prepared for it on their own time. Hoffman played in multiple tournaments, both individually and with other players from the team, during the offseason. Thwaites spent the offseason getting stronger and improving upon his speed. These were huge factors in why Hoffman and Thwaites were able to make state. Senior Eric Hill was the only other person from FRHS to make the state team.
Although some specific players were able to do well, the team as a whole encountered struggles throughout the season. Thwaites said that the players weren’t always consistent during their tournaments. “Our team had some problems playing well together early on,” said Thwaites. “We fixed the problem during the season and had a solid year.”
One thing that the team feels it did well this year is players stepped up when they were needed most. “As a team, we handle tournaments well, and when we need to, we step up and compete” Thwaites said.
The seniors on the golf team helped prepare the underclassmen for the years to come. “The team was composed of a bunch of seniors which will help the underclassmen learn from us and build upon our mistakes,” Hoffman said.
Thwaites believes the future of the FRHS golf team looks to be heading in the right direction and the team will look to prove that during the 2014 season.
