A movie about time travel that is not only easy to follow but absolutely charming is practically unheard of. I didn’t know what to expect when I sat down last weekend to watch “About Time,” but I was more than pleasantly surprised.
The movie debuted Nov. 8 and has since made $4.8 million at the box office. Well known actress Rachel McAdams stars alongside fiery haired Domhnall Gleeson as boyfriend and girlfriend to each other, and eventually husband and wife. Their relationship is enviable for its simplicity and humor, but it wouldn’t be that way if Gleeson’s character didn’t have time-travel abilities.
The website for the film summarizes “About Time,” saying, “Tim can’t change history, but he can change what happens and has happened in his own life—so he decides to make his world a better place, by getting a girlfriend. Sadly, that turns out not to be as easy as you might think.”
The only thing not mentioned by any form of advertisement is that there is also HUGE focus on the relationship between Tim and his father.
Tim’s Father is played by Bill Nighy, and the casting is perfect. The oddness and biting humor radiates from Nighy as he performs in the film. His character is also exceedingly sincere and that is the reason the relationship between him and his son is such a big deal in the story.
The acting as a whole in the production is amazing, and there’s no doubt an incredible group of casting directors chose brilliantly.
Richard Curtis, director and creator of “About Time,” is known for his light-hearted and touching rom-coms, such as “Love Actually” and “Notting Hill.” But this newest is certainly the cherry that tops his career. The plotline is so well thought of and the story is one I have never heard before, and that is always a good thing.
I recommend this movie profoundly! It’s a fantastically inspirational story and plot that truly touches your heart. I laughed, I cried, but I also walked away from “About Time” with a clearer mind and an absolute adoration for the film. According to its website, “ ‘About Time’ is a comedy about love and time travel, which discovers that, in the end, making the most of life may not need time travel at all.”
