Much like Mercedes-AMG Black Series Cars, Coupe Sport Lightweight, or CSL, is reserved for the most special cars made by BMW’s M-Division. Only cars with the best handling and lightweight packaging make the cut. It has only been used on two cars from BMW’s past, the 3.0 liter CSL From The 70’s, or known as the Batmobile due it’s crazy and wacky styling, and the 2003 E46 M3 CSL That wasn’t available in the U.S. But now some sources say that the CSL name could be making a comeback with the M4.
As a CSL The M4 will lose significant weight over the normal M4 coupe, BMW estimates 220 pounds lost. That won’t be all, The M4 CSL will also see significant styling differences over the regular car through a new Front splitter, rear sproiler, and rear diffuser. Based off of the spy photos it will m ost likely look similar to the M4 Safety Car used in MotoGP. Inside it will be the same story. There will be light weight sport seats and a rear seat delete. As for power, the 3-liter twin-turbo Straight six will also see some upgrades and is expected to make 500 horsepower and 443 ft-lbs of torque.
No word on when it will go on sale or if it will be sold in the U.S. or even if it will be called a CSL. If the CSL name does come back, it will be carrying the large reputation of a BMW CSL of lightweight high performance. Hopefully it will live up to those expectations.
