On the evening of Wednesday May 13th, the Fossil Ridge High School swim and dive team traveled to denver for the Xfinity Sports awards. The team was nominated for two awards, the first as a whole,“Most Outstanding Girls Team,” and then an individual award for senior, Bailey Nero, who was nominated for “Most Outstanding Performance (Girls)”
Nero walked away from the night with the individual victory of having the most outstanding sports performance of any girl in any colorado high school sport at any level. She accepted the award as her entire swim team cheered in the audience, some teammates screaming, “B Nero is my hero!” The Auburn committed athlete accepted an award with a huge smile and support from her team. “I really enjoyed going to the Xfinity awards. It was quite the honor and surprise to receive ‘Female Performance of the Year,’ and I’m so glad I had the support of my fellow teammates during the ceremony. I’m pretty bummed that as a whole team we did not get ‘Most Outstanding Girls Team,’ but it was quite the privilege to be nominated. I am so proud of my team. Overall, it was an awesome experience.”
The team lost in the “Most Outstanding Girls Team,”category to Lewis-Palmer High School’s volleyball team. The Monument, Colorado team was ranked number 1 in the nation for their past season and also had a player, senior Alexa Smith, nominated for an individual award.
After winning the 5A state title, the award nomination was just the icing on the cake for the girls swim team’s season, Nero’s award win being the cake topper.
