With the regional game right around the corner on Saturday, October 17 the girls softball team is starting to feel the nervous buzz of anticipation. The girls have played quite a season this year and are looking forward to getting out there and playing the best they can.
Looking back on the season most of the players agreed with Junior Grace Philop, “We’ve been kind of up and down the whole season, I would say. We’ve had some really good highs and some really bad lows, but now that we are at least in the regionals and going to state, it’s kind of when anything can happen, I’d say that now we are in a pretty good spot.” Senior Mallory Pojar agreed saying “We started off to kind of a slow start, but it’s definitely gotten a ton better, and we’ve had some great successes, this year and we’ve really become a good team.”
The girls also seemed to agree about some of the more challenging games this season so far. Junior Megan Jamison thought “Our most emotional game, I feel, was Rocky. When we play Rocky it’s a big deal because it’s inner city, but tough game, in general, I’d say was either Mountain Range or Broomfield.” Sophomore Hayley Henderson also felt that Broomfield was the hardest game this season.
All the girls are putting extra effort this week in order to succeed in their personal game and the pressure is on. Junior Megan Jamison plays pitcher and hopes “I hope that I pitch well personally, throwing strikes and getting the ball to my defense is a big part of what I do.” Freshman Karen Manly plays catcher and feels the pressure of playing well for the team “Since it’s like the grand finally especially for the seniors, I think it’s important that you play the best you can, and go as hard as you can the whole time.”
Softball as a sport however, not only is something the players love doing, but it is something that they dedicate a lot of time to. When asked about their personal lives, school life, and how they are affected by the sport, the girls seemed to agree that the time they put in now is all worth it in the end. Grace Philop admits “I’d say I have significantly less time to do homework and have a social life because this [softball] takes up a good chunk of your time after school, but it’s good and if you put in a little bit extra each week and work a little bit harder at practice you see it pay off in you games.” The games and time commitment may be tough and time consuming, but it gives the team more of a family feel since they spend so much time together. According to senior Mallory Pojar “It’s definitely hard to balance things sometimes, but it’s all worth it because when you come to softball you have a family and you learn to be independent and confident in yourself, and you really transform into a leader.”
