Top five hikes for locals

Hiking holds an enjoyment for many here in Colorado. Now that the weather is getting warmer, people want something to do outside. Lo and behold, here is what I think are the top five hikes in and near Fort Collins.

  1. Horsetooth Rock

Horsetooth is known for its beautiful reservoir and various hiking spots, the most popular being Horsetooth Rock. With an elevation gain of 1,505 feet, the four hour hike is the perfect place to catch the sunrise! It captures a beautiful view of Fort Collins and you feel on top of the world.

  1. Grey Rock Trail

Some people go to Poudre Canyon just for the pretty drive. Hiking at Grey Rock, with an elevation gain of 2,000 feet, you get a little bit of everything – scenery, water features, wildlife, hiking through a mixed conifer forest, even a little bit of climbing. The all-day hike offers perfect rest areas to sit and enjoy nature with your friends or family. The top of the mountain is a perfect place to stargaze if you don’t mind hiking in the dark.

  1.  Devil’s Backbone

For a more relaxed hike, the Devil’s Backbone trail is favorable for the scenic aspect. The main attraction to this hike is the cool rock formations. With it only being a 3 mile roundtrip hike, it’s good for an easy unplanned “Let’s go on a hike!” type of day. Hang out with your friends or take your family and pets.

  1.  Chasm Lake Spur Trail

This free hike just outside Estes Park is very easy to follow and only about 8 miles roundtrip. On this hike, you get to see Peacock Pool, Lower Chasm, and the Diamond. This is the most beautiful hike in my opinion. Depending on if you like to stop and check out the scenery or not, this hike will take anywhere from two to four hours. As with any hike you go on, you will want to dress in layers because of the constantly changing weather as you approach the 11,000’ elevation.

  1. The Twin Crater Lakes

The Twin Crater Lakes are one of the hidden gems of the Front Range. This is definitely a great backpacking trip! Although the hike is a bit mundane, other than the beautiful aspen forest along the way, the destination makes every step you take worth it! When you reach the top there are two breathtaking lakes and views of the peaks along the valley. If you are able to make this tough hike you will be pleasantly surprised when you arrive at your destination.
