Four wrestlers competed in the 5A State Wrestling Tournament Thursday, February 16 through Saturday, February 18. Brennan Houchin, Kyle Smart, Will Hendrickson and Nathan Meyer were the four competitors, however, it was Meyer and Henrickson that advanced to the semi finals. Henrickson did not end up placing but Meyer went on to place 6th, the first state placer for Fossil Ridge High School in 4 years.
Day one of the tournament was a very successful day for the Sabercat wrestling team, three out of the four wrestlers won their matches. Hendrickson was the first to wrestle and won his match by pin in the second period. Smart was second and lost his match 1-7. Meyer followed and pinned his opponent in 1:11. Houchin ended the night for the Fossil team with a win of 3-2.
The Fossil wrestlers all competed in two matches on the second day, not including Smart. He only competed in one match on the second day because he lost that match and fell out of the tournament. Hendrickson went 1-1 for the day, losing his first match 2-13 and then winning the second match 4-2. By winning his second match of the day, he advanced to day three. Meyer also went 1-1, winning his first match 7-5 and losing by pin during his second match. After winning his second match in a row, Meyer already secured a position in the semifinals and earned the title of being the first wrestler for Fossil to place in state in four years. Houchin lost both matches on day two, one by pin and the other by points.
Going into the third day of the tournament Hendrickson and Meyer were going to be wrestling for third place. Hendrickson would face a wrestler from Mountain Vista and Meyer would go up against a wrestler from Pomona in the consolation semifinals. Between the two Fossil wrestlers, Hendrickson was first up. He fell out of the tournament after losing a close 8-10 match, leaving Meyer the only one left to represent Fossil. He had a tough match and lost 3-11 but was given the chance to wrestle Thunder Ridge for fifth. Midway through the match, in the second period Meyer got pinned and earned him sixth in state.
Congratulations to Nathan Meyer on placing sixth in state for wrestling and to a great season for the Fossil wrestling team.
