Fort Collins High School played two home games over the weekend. The first, a hard-fought struggle ending in a loss. The second, a big win that any team could be proud of.

The Lambkins opened the two-game homestand on Friday, January 21 against the Ralston Valley Mustangs. Both Collins and Ralston entered the matchup with only one league loss, making this a crucial conference matchup.

The Lambkins struck first, with a big goal from captain Riley Laub less than five minutes into the game. However, the lead would not last. The Mustangs struck back in the second period, tying the game.

The game went back and forth, with both teams trading scoring opportunities. Unfortunately, for the Lambkins, it was Ralston Valley who scored to break the tie, taking a 2-1 lead. The Mustangs added an empty net goal at the end of the game, beating Collins by two goals.

Peter Kelly has lit up the scoreboard all year, with four goals through ten games.

The Lambkins could not dwell on the loss, as they were back in action 24 hours later against Standley Lake. Collins was able to pick up the victory in a big performance, winning 5-2 and instilling extra confidence into their players.

“We kind of needed that…it’s good to just keep moving,” said Fossil Ridge High School junior, Peter Kelly.

Kelly is a part of the Lambkins top line, along with Laub and Jason Campos. Those three made a big impact, as each player had a goal.

“We work well together, it’s really nice…I had a little slump for a while, but felt good to finally get one[a goal],” Kelly said.

Fort Collins was unstoppable on the power play, as three of their five goals came with a man advantage, including Kelly’s tally. The Lambkins changed their system, now running a 3-1-1. This new style allows for a strong first push with three players, with another player coming by himself, and the defensemen bringing up the rear.

“It’s working…We’re throwing pucks top and then just shooting…trying to get shots on goal,” Kelly said.

Fort Collins will play later this week on the road against the 9-3 Valor Christian Eagles.

Defensemen Braden Kerr was one of the five goal scorers in Saturday’s game.
