Girl’s swim and dive team nominated for XFINITY Sports Award

The Fossil Ridge High School Girls Swim and Dive Team is nominated for the XFINITY Sports Award. For the award, four teams are selected as nominees in the following categories: Team of the Year, Coach of the Year, Most Outstanding Performance, and Colorado Athlete of the Year. The Fossil Ridge girls swim and dive team is nominated for “Most Outstanding Girls Team,” and they also won the Class 5A state championship during the 2014/2015 school year.

“As a team, we’ve earned it. I feel we worked insanely hard this year and had a set amount of goals that we focused on for the season,” said senior varsity captain Bailey Nero. “If we win, it’s just the icing on the cake of a successful season. It would be a huge privilege to receive this award and I would be so proud of my team” said Nero. There will be an award ceremony on Wednesday May 13 at the Cable Center at the University of Denver campus, 2000 Buchtel Blvd. A red carpet event begins at 6:30 p.m. and the ceremony starts at 7:00 p.m. The keynote speaker will be Denver Broncos wide receiver, Rod Smith. Additionally, this year’s ceremony will be broadcast live on CET.

“I think that this award recognizes this amazing team of young women athletes,” said varsity girls swim and dive coach, Tasha Marchant. “At least in the pool we know that they were the solid best in state, this nomination validates that across the board.”

The other nominees for the “Most Outstanding Girls Team” is the Overland gymnastic team, the Lewis-Palmer volleyball team, and the Colorado Academy field hockey team.

Nero is a nominee for the “Most Outstanding Performance (Girls)” award and she committed to Auburn University for this coming fall. “I played a big role in helping my team win state this year. As an individual, I won two state titles and was on two relays that won state titles as well. I was also awarded the 2015 CHSAA (Colorado High School Activities Association) Swimmer of the year,” said Nero. “I would feel honored to win this award and it would all be because of the support I had from friends, coaches, and family.” The other girl nominees are Lauren Gregory from the Fort Collins cross country team and Ezra Smith from the Summit High School skiing team.
