The Fossil Ridge High School girls basketball team is on a winning streak coming into the second week of school this year. Playing at Rocky Mountain High School the Sabercats beat the Lobos 61-40 on Tuesday, January 16. Fossil’s teamwork and skill has helped them in their impressive season with 11 wins and three losses so far, even beating number one Highlands Ranch High School.

Although Rocky had the home court advantage, Fossil played strong and smart from the tip off to the final buzzer. The Sabercats were the clear leaders in the first quarter, making shot after shot, however the Lobo’s showed off their strong defensive line. Rocky’s ability to block and steal were one of the main reasons Fossil didn’t have a higher lead going into the second quarter. At the end of the first quarter Fossil led the scoreboard 12-2.

The Lobos stepped onto the court with more determination and aggression when the second quarter began. Along with their strong defensive line Rocky’s offense made smarter plays and got the ball up the court more. Even though Rocky was playing better, Fossil had come to win, not only keeping but adding to their lead. The Sabercats held a 25-14 lead over Rocky at halftime.

Both teams returned to the court after half with more aggressive offensive lines and plays. Fossil outplayed the Lobo’s offense, but Rocky still played a stronger defense that blocked numerous shots from the Sabercats. While Fossil took the third quarter 46-30, their opponent was beginning to fight harder to defend their homecourt.

The last quarter seemed as though Rocky might over power Fossil, when Rocky began to make more of their shots and free throws. But the Sabercats were on a winning streak that no Lobo was going to stop. Fossil’s quick recoveries and tough offense kept the ball by Rocky’s net and allowed them to take the game. Taking another win, Fossil beat their district rival Rocky 61-40.

Next week the Sabercats will play at home on Tuesday, January 23 against Broomfield High School. Come out and support the girls as they work to keep their winning streak.
