The week of Thanksgiving is traditionally a week of spending time with family and giving thanks to those in your life. However, for three students here at FRHS, their Thanksgiving was far from traditional.
On Thursday, November 26, the u16 Arsenal Royal girls’ Soccer Team flew out to Las Vegas, Nevada for the Majors Cup. Katie Townsend, Emily Brey, and Julie Brey are all a part of the team. Even though they were not able to be with their families, the team tried to stick to some of the traditions by having a traditional Thanksgiving meal. After checking into their hotel, the team joined other teams from their club for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner.
Day one of the tournament was Friday, November 27. They played the Players 99 Elite team and lost 2-3 in a close game. Julie Brey scored one of the team’s goal by volleying a cross from the outside into the back of the net. The trip wasn’t all about soccer, it was also a time for the team to bond with one another and become closer friends.
Saturday, November 28 was day two of the tournament and they played two games. Their first game was against Heat FC 99 A and they won 4-0. Katie Townsend scored in that game, she was in the right place at the right time and was able to tap the ball in just before the goalkeeper got her hands on it. The third goal was also scored by Katie Townsend off of a rebound shot. The last goal scored was by Julie Brey with an unstoppable shot, ending the game with a win for the team. Later that night, the team played their second game of the day against Heat FC 99 B and won 7-0. In this game, the Fossil students were very successful which led the team to a blowout win against their opponent. Emily Brey scored the first goal for the team by finishing a cross from the sideline on the back post. Julie Brey scored two goals, helping the team lead 3-0, both goals were shots from outside the box and into the corners of the goal.
Day three of games was Sunday, November 29. They played early in the championship game early in the morning against the Vegas Players. After a hard battle, the team lost a close one 1-2. The team was devastated because they were so close to winning their second out of state tournament. Even though they took second, they were still very successful scoring 14 goals and only giving up 5 goals.
Since they were in Las Vegas, Nevada, they had to go to the M&M World and purchase M&Ms for their plane ride back on Sunday night. Then late Sunday night, they headed home with a silver medal.
