International discussion

Are you interested in discussing international events?  If so, the Amnesty International is the place for you! This club meets on Tuesdays at 3:00 in room W105.  Amnesty was created this year by Kevin Ploetcher and Michael Yoo.  There are around eleven members in this club.   In the meetings, the members discuss events and news that goes on in the world.  Cambri Van Tassell a member of this club described, “We talk about a lot of international issues going on and get to give our input on what we could do to help these events”.

Most recently they discussed how the arranged marriages happening in India are becoming a very controversial and international issue.  To try and help this cause, each member wrote a letter to the government trying to persuade them to abolish arranged marriages.  Van Tassell then went on, “it was cool to write these letters because I felt like we were actually trying to help something bigger then what we usually do in our community”.

The members in Amnesty are beginning to plan a fundraiser to help support a program outside of the United States.  They have not chosen the program yet but they will choose one soon.  The idea of this club is to discuss world problems and then use that discussion to try and make a bigger difference in the world internationally.  More members are wanted and welcome so come contribute to Amnesty International!
